Everglades Region Takes Home First Runner-Up for PCA’s Region of the Year Award

Congratulations Everglades Region Members! At the PCA Parade 2022 in the Poconos, EGS won first runner-up for PCA’s Region of the Year.

To be selected out of 147 PCA Regions is truly an honor and a reflection of the spirit of all of our members and the dedication and commitment of the Everglades Board Members.

Following last year’s #1 Public Service award, we turned our attention to focus on the planning and implementation of a unique variety of member events including autocross, tours, drives, tech sessions, and more recently social events like our summer dinners throughout all sectors of our Region. Along with our continued commitment to philanthropic activities we presented PCA with a strong case for Region of the Year. We just missed #1, but we still are thrilled with this great honor.

Thank you EGS members for helping make our Region one of the very best Regions in the nation.

Special thanks to the team that assembled our ROY application: Faith and Steve Wassersug, Dave Noelken and of course our Past President, JP Petracco.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to any of us to ask questions or get more involved in future events.

P.S. 2022 marks EGS’s 25th Year Anniversary and we now have another reason to celebrate. EGS members will be the first to know about some fabulous PCA announcements coming this fall. Watch your banner emails so you don’t miss out!

Join EGS for last Porsche Dinner Night of the Season

Hey Everglades Region members, the very last Porsche Dinner night will take place on May 11 at 6:00 p.m. at Cass Cay Restaurant & Bar, as many of our members are heading north for spring and summer. However, we’ll be doing random gatherings, such as a trip to Fords in Cape Coral, throughout the summer for our full-time Floridian members. Make sure to keep an eye out on our events tab and check your email for details on upcoming events. Thank you for making this season a success!

Everglades Region Members Support NCH Simulation Center

On Saturday, March 19, Everglades Region members gathered at NCH Baker Hospital to fundraise and generate awareness for the Judith & Marvin Herb Family Simulation Center. Our support for this cutting-edge facility is part of a new, exciting partnership we’ve developed with Naples Community Hospital (NCH).

The Simulation Center is a training and learning facility that recreates standard and customized scenarios to improve patient safety and outcomes. Its goal is to prepare and train doctors, nurses, technicians and other health professionals entering the field, as well as EMTs, school nurses, and more. The center will help enhance healthcare right here in Southwest Florida and is the only one of its kind between Tampa and Miami!

The Everglades Region raised funds for new equipment and technology to help advance its capabilities, and Porsche Naples joined as our community partner, committing a financial contribution as well. Complimentary food and beverages were provided in the Telford Auditorium, where our members also heard from NCH leaders.

We hope to continue to grow this event, and our partnership with NCH, in the years to come!

Everglades Region Members Hit the Road for Peace River Tour on Jan. 15, 2022

Everglades Region members love to explore new roads in their Porsche’s. That was the spirit on January 15th when 32 driver / navigator car teams embarked on the Peace River Tour.

It was a crisp, blue sky morning when Porsches began arriving at the Fort Myers staging area. President Steve Eisenberg welcomed everyone, including visiting PCA member Jim Lynn from the Allegheny Region. Good move Jim, it’s a lot warmer in Southwest Florida than Pittsburgh!

Following the drivers meeting, teams set off in drive groups for the 101 mile tour to explore the boundaries of the Peace River. The tour ended in Punta Gorda on the shore of beautiful Charlotte Harbor. The only incident was a Boxster that suffered a flat tire.
Members had an opportunity to explore the shops inside Fisherman’s Village and enjoy a casual lunch.

The next Everglades Region tour is planned in April when we’ll explore northeast toward Lake Okeechobee. Stay tuned!

Porsche & Friends Parade to Golisano Children’s Hospital Sets New Records

On December 4, the PCA Everglades Region celebrated the 5th Annual Porsche & Friends Parade to Golisano Children’s Hospital. Chair and organizer Valerie Pascale Petracco counted more than 170 cars that joined the police escort, setting a record for the event.

Once at the hospital, the guests enjoyed spreading holiday cheer to the young patients with the toys they delivered. Santa and Mrs. Claus led the way on the Iona McGregor Fire Department’s hook and ladder and made an appearance high above the crowd to greet the children in the windows. Santa’s elves were able to say hello to the patients, families, and staff through the windows as they repelled down the eight-stories of the hospital. The generous donors made sure this holiday season is just as special as any other year, despite the difficult last 20 months.

Golisano Children’s Hospital was pleased to announce that $530,000 was raised in cash donations in 30 minutes – another record for the event. These dollars will complete the purchase of a Zeiss Kinevo Robotic System. This much-needed lifesaving machine will be purchased from funds raised over the last two years. The machine costs slightly over $800,000.

“Certainly a win for local children,” Everglades Region President JP Petracco shared. “We were able to finalize the purchase of the Zeiss Kinevo Robotic System that the Pediatric Neurosurgery Dept so badly needed. Now some 70 children annually will not need to be airlifted to Tampa or Orlando for brain injuries.”

A past PCA Zone 4 Rep Steve Southard said, “My wife and I will mark 52 years of PCA membership in February and can honestly say that we have never seen any other event that matches the Porsche & Friends Parade we participated in last Saturday. I was on the PCA National staff for eight years and traveled quite a bit, attending many events in the Midwest – and do not remember anything like it.”

Along with the local and visiting PCA members in attendance, Everglades Region’s community partner, Porsche Ft Myers, was there with a new Taycan and Managing Director’s Mitchell Sherwood’s refurbished 930. Their support for Everglades’ community service efforts is unwavering and they are always the first to assist.

The Porsche Experience Center Trip, Oct. 7-10, 2021

The Everglades Region PCA hosted 12 of its Members who spent several days at The Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta, Georgia (the home of Porsche Cars North America) the first weekend this October. This center was named appropriately; what an experience. From the first view of the magnificent building and its architecture to the driving experiences and the entire PEC team, this truly was a great trip and one to be repeated.

On Friday, several Members took part in a docent guided tour of the facility, learning more about the brand, the history of Porsche, the story of Porsche in the United States, and the Porsche Experience Center, itself. To see the various cars and the “rainbow” of colors was beyond impressive. One car in particular I will always remember… a PTS, Violet Metallic 918 Spyder Weissach Edtion with full carbon fiber, on loan from the famous Ingram Car Collection in Durham, NC. Another cool fact and exhibit we learned was that Porsche maintains 52,000 “outdated” parts and tools for all Porsches ever made. So, if you have an older model and need work done, no need to fear not being able to obtain OEM parts and have work done. The Center also has recently opened its very own “Classics Shop” to repair and restore all these treasures. We observed several classics in various staged of restoration.

The dining facilities included the rooftop Carrera Café where we enjoyed a light breakfast and lunch and the very upscale Restaurant 356 for another lunch. Food there was very well prepared and tasty. We also dined at the Apron Restaurant in the host hotel, The Kimpton Overland, immediately adjacent to the Center.

After touring and dining, Saturday afternoon was spent enjoying the track. A senior instructor provided us a detailed briefing with an overview of what was to come along with a very well-prepared video of each segment of the driving experience.

The track – well, what can we say? Awesome. The driving experience consists of the Handling Circuit, Low Friction Handling, Low-Friction Circle, Kick Plate, Dynamic Area (obstacle course and launch control) and an Off-Road Course. These circuits truly demonstrate the handling capabilities of the modern Porsche, whether it is a Cayman, Taycan, Macan, 911 or Boxster; the cars are precision works of art. Everyone managed the circuits differently and we were thrilled to have been able to take part. Each of the 12 drivers had their very own personal instructor in the cars with them to guide and advise. The instructors were experienced and they pushed the driver as far as the driver wanted to go. Indeed we explored the limits of the cars and the drivers.

There is also a simulator room where one can “drive” any Porsche on various race tracks, around the world. Worth trying.

While members were driving, two of the wives, Sharon and Linda were able to observe from a covered observation deck, taking photos and video. Everyone had a blast and we are already wanting to come back next year!!

And finally, for everyone, there is of course…the Boutique, where all manner of Porsche memorabilia is available for purchase. As the saying goes… “Porsche, There is No Substitute”.

Taycan Event + Four-Door Reunion at Riptide Brewery Recap

The Taycan Event + 4 door reunion was a big success. We had over 70 participants  and 48 cars join us for good food, company and beer of course!

We had 6 Taycans, 8 Macans, 7 Cayennes and 1 Panamera, 2 GT2 RS’s, and many more 911’s  all parked in front of Riptide Brewery in Bonita Springs.

Porsche Fort Myers was our lead sponsor. Their General Managing Partner, Mitch Sherwood brought several members of his team to mingle with and answer members questions about all things Porsche. Mitch saw first-hand the power PCA driving business to him because he booked several test drives and follow up visits to his shop. Mitch was all smiles and complements after the event!  We have a solid relationship there and the future is wide open for more great collaborations.

To sum up, the Music was just loud enough, the mood was festive and people seemed to really enjoy the day. The Boys and Girls club food truck was a hit. BTW, they are very selective of their locations. Their long standing relationship with Dan (Porsche Naples) was helpful to get them on board. Riptide Brewing did good business and was super thankful, too.

September’s Wheels and Espresso Round-Up

Good friends, great coffee, and even better cars. Our first Wheels and Espresso event held Sunday, September 26, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. was nothing less than a smashing success!

Members and car enthusiasts gathered to peruse a display of Porsche vehicles stationed neatly, side-by side in the front parking lot of Hello Coffee in north Naples. The showcase of cars included a white Carrera GT3, a night blue Turbo S, a carmine red Targa 4S, a black 996 Carrera 4S, and many more.

Taped up proudly on the café’s window was the PCA Everglades Region banner and a 2016 Porsche 911 R official showroom poster, a rare collector’s item. Several Porsche mementos were set up on a table outside for viewing, too. Attendees stuck around to sip coffee and vote on a Porsche concours show. Special gifts were provided to the 1st and 2nd place winners!

A big thank you goes out to our friends at Porsche Naples, Tyler Bishop and Danielle Greenberg, and Chris Pantode and his staff at Hello Coffee. PCA Everglades Region plans to make Wheels and Espresso a staple event for classic and exotic car fanatics throughout the Southwest Florida community. Join us on Sunday, October 24, same time and same place, for the next event!

Everglades Region road trip to Sebring

About 25 Everglades Region Porschephiles gathered Friday May 21 for a back roads tour to Sebring and an overnight stop at the historic Inn on the Lakes. Leading the most “conservative spirited run” in recent years, Robert “The Vig” still prompted a quick U-turn upon missing the left turn onto appropriately named Tasmania Road. At this unplanned U -turn, member Blaine Duncan in his new 718 GTS 4.0, took the opportunity to lead the group and charged along the sweeping curved roads on their way to the Sugar Sand Rum Distillery at Lake Placid.

Tasmania Road was just an appetizer for the fun to come once the group turned left onto Old State Route 8.  Now the fun began.  Miniature hills (including signs stating “Hill Blocks View” along the road), reminded one of moguls on ski slopes providing some creativity for our Porsches. It was a truly a fun run, that not one member had driven before !

After a tour of the distillery and tasting, the group sped on to the final destination of Inn on the Lakes in Sebring.  Cocktail hour, dinner, and some give-aways brought the day to a close (except for those who headed back to the bar). Thank you to PORSCHE of Ft. Myers for the great PORSCHE gifts. Some stayed the night, some spent the weekend at the famed Sebring International Raceway participating in the Driver’s Education and Autocross  hosted by Suncoast and Goldcoast Regions.

Everglades members Tania and Bob Pleischl put together the route, a run she ran many time with her mother in their Miata Club. Both Tania and Bob hope to to make this a yearly event for the club” It was a great experience for all. Thank you Tania & Bob!

Autocross Action At Buckingham Airfield

Drivers returned to Buckingham Airfield April 18th for round #2 of the Everglades Region Autocross Season. After 16 months, it was a thrill to be back, driving the concrete runway of this WWII era airport. Buckingham was built in 1942 by the US Army Air Corps to train aerial gunners.    52 drivers, including 28 Porsches, tackled the fast and flowing course where the quickest cars reached top speeds over 80mph. The field included 15 novice drivers, many participating in their first autocross. Short of a race track, there is no better way to hone your driving skills and explore the performance limits of your Porsche.   Following the drivers meeting, cars were divided into three drive groups. Everglades Region uses the SCCA classification system to group cars of similar performance capability. After that, the drivers have six runs to record their quickest lap time.    Setting fast time of the day was SCCA National Champion David Marcus, laying down a 59.954 second raw time in his 2020 Toyota Supra. Although David lives in Windermere, Florida, he is a regular competitor at Buckingham. Everglades Region member Joe Wright from Cape Coral was fast Porsche, recording 61.120 seconds in his 2015 GT3. Two more Porsches followed. Louis Hudyman with 61.732 in his 2020 Cayman GT4. Howard Mintz was just behind with 62.001 in his 2020 Cayman GT4.    Joe Broussard from Naples was the quickest Novice, crossing the line in 70.784 seconds behind the wheel of his 2006 Cayman.    A special shout-out to Tom Lazansky and his beautiful 1979 – 911SC. Air cooled Porsches have become so valuable, most are pampered and protected. It was exciting to see Tom and his 911 on course, carving through the cones. Did we mention this is Tom’s first Porsche and his first autocross? Ferdinand Porsche would be proud !   Complete autocross results are posted on this website under the Driving Events – Autocross tabs. Scroll down to Autocross Results. Thanks to our partners at Gulfcoast Autocrossers for timing, scoring and on-track support   Event #3 in the Everglades Region Autocross Season is scheduled for May 22nd at Sebring. Sign-up now on clubregistration.

“41 South Rally” Explores Big Cypress and Beyond

Stormy weather could not stop sixteen Everglades Region teams from tackling the “41 South Rally” on Sunday afternoon, April 11th. Pelican Larry’s Raw Bar & Grill on Immokalee Road served as the jumping off point.

Following check-in and the drivers meeting, teams headed out start the 140 mile drive. Traveling east and north, the route skirted Ave Maria before connecting with FL-29. Who knew the university in Ave Maria used to be located in Ypsilanti, Michigan ?

Then began a long run south through wilderness and panther habitat to US-41. Turning east toward Miami, navigators were kept busy looking for the smallest post office in the world and the home base for Florida’s sasquatch.

Big Cypress Oasis provided an opportunity to stretch and check out the alligators, before returning west on 41.

The final leg of the rally cruised through Everglades City and Chokaloskee, finishing at the rustic Rod & Gun Club in Everglades City. Over the years, five presidents have stayed here – FDR, Truman, Eisenhower, Hoover, and Nixon. Actors such as John Wayne, Burt Reynolds, Sally Field, Sean Connery, Danny Glover, and Joe Pesci have stayed here, as well as Burl Ives and Gypsy Rose Lee in 1945, while filming “Winds Across the Everglades.” Mick Jagger has stayed here. So has Ernest Hemingway.

Drivers and navigators enjoyed beverages and late lunch on the verandah, overlooking the Barron River, while their rally questions were scored.

Coming out on top with a perfect score were father and son team Duffy and Clay Cofer from Cape Coral

Finishing second was the three man team of Kyle Armstrong, Nick Cosgrove and Justin Wurzberg driving a Cayenne Diesel

Third went to Mike and Karen Weiss in their 911S

In fourth was the family team of Richard Lucki and Alan Anderson piloting a Cayman GT4

Fifth ended in a three way tie with Frank Kraft and Jeff Thompson winning in a lottery draw-off

All the top finishers went home with beautiful Porsche prizes.

Special thanks to Pelican Larry’s for hosting the start and Rod and Gun Club for the finish.

Everglades Region Caravan To Sebring SVRA

The Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) returned to Sebring International Raceway on Saturday, February 20th and 43 Everglades Region members were on hand to take in all the action.

Sebring SpeedTour is one of the most popular events on the SVRA schedule, drawing vintage race cars from all eras, makes and models. Following the vintage races on Saturday afternoon, the pro Trans-Am series took the track to qualify for their Sunday race.

It was an early start when 22 member Porsches gathered at the Lee County Rest Area along I-75 to begin the journey to Sebring. Traveling in drive groups, the caravan headed northeast through LaBelle and up US27 to historic Sebring International Raceway. On arrival, members joined over 400 fellow enthusiasts in the Hagerty Cars & Caffeine – Car Show. Once settled, members were free to explore the track and paddock area. Access to the race cars, teams and drivers is one of the highlights of any SVRA race weekend.

At lunchtime, members had an opportunity to tour the track. It was a thrill to lap the same circuit where Porsche has claimed 18 overall wins and 72 class wins. Unfortunately, with 400 cars on track at the same time, we did not set any new lap records!

All in all, it was a great experience and perfect prelude to the 12 Hours of Sebring coming up on March 20th.
