Everglades Region Autocross Back On Track

On September 12th, Everglades Region and Gold Coast Region teamed up to host an autocross on the concrete paddock between turns 16 and 17 at Sebring Raceway.  The day was met by some very interesting challenges as hurricane Sally swept through the area that day causing periods of heavy winds and rains that knocked down the course and, in an interesting albeit messy turn of events, blew a port-a-potty over a fence and onto the track at turn 16!  The heavy winds had one benefit, however, in that they dried the course for us in record time.  About 20 mins after the storm, the track was as dry as it was before the rain and we were right back to racing, after resetting the course that had been blown away! Results for the 28 drivers who braved the tropical weather are posted in the autocross tab on this website.

On November 14th, Everglades Region hosted an Autocross Test and Tune event at Venice Festival Grounds.  Although scheduled as a full-scale autocross, conflicts with other events turned this into a small private test and tune opportunity. Six dedicated PCA autocrossers (Jon McClain, Fred Mundie, Tom Pitser, David Wells, Jay Huebner and Tom Kring) attacked the course which is adjacent to the Venice, Florida airport.  Although the day started foggy conditions, the skies cleared quickly and remained beautiful throughout the rest of the event.

We started by running a full course in 2 car groups for the first hour and then broke for a data and video debrief.  The middle part of the day focused on increasing, decreasing and constant radius corners followed by another debrief and then work on a slalom course. Throughout the day, instruction was provided to those that wanted it from Dave Wells and Tom Kring.  To finish up and to put all of the lessons of the day to work, we went back to the full course for the last hour.

Safe to say that everyone got all the practice they could have wanted as the 6 drivers recorded more than 60 runs each for the day.  A lot of improvement was made and our brakes and tires got a real workout.

Due to the very positive response to this event from all in attendance, we will likely add this type of event as an addition to our regular autocross schedule for next year.
