Kayak at Ding Darling

Join us on aneasy paddle through a lush and beautiful wetland forest on Sanibel Island’s DingDarling National Wildlife Refuge, considered one of the 10 best kayak trips inthe US.Members and guests are invited to paddle along the Commodore Creek KayakTrail led by a naturalist guide.On the way you’ll be surrounded by redmangroves, wading birds, and unsurpassed peace and quiet.

All skill levelsare welcome. Tandem kayaks are provided and beginners can be paired withmoreexperienced kayakers, if desired. The water is generally smooth and we willlearn about the rich back-bayecosystem and the wildlife that lives there. The90-minute kayak trip begins at 11:00 am with an introduction to kayaking andgetting everyone outfitted (e.g. boats, paddles and life jackets). You’ll wantto wear shoes and clothes that you do not mind getting wet from minorsplashing.

After a quick change,we’llcaravan our Porsches off to lunch at the Wassersugs for a CaloosahatcheeCookout beginning about12:30. The Wassersugs live just a few miles from theentrance to Sanibel Island, and it’s on your way home! Not a kayaker but wantto experience beautiful Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge? Come join theadventure! Take a self-guided visit to the Ding Darling Center: After 30minutes getting acclimatedin the Visitors’ Center, take a 5-mile drive alongthe Ding Darling Wildlife Drive ($5 per vehicle or free with anational parksenior pass.) Have your camera available to snap the wildlife along the way.There are plentyof places to get off the beaten track and enjoy this extensiveand remarkable preserved wetland.
