Track Opportunities in South Florida

Track Opportunities in South Florida

Porsches have always been bred for the race track. So it’s only natural that PCA members look for opportunities to test themselves and their cars at the track. We are blessed to have Sebring, a world renowned circuit in our backyard and Homestead Miami Speedway a short drive across Alligator Alley. Driver Education (DE) or High Performance Driving Events (HPDE) offer an opportunity to learn to drive on a real race track. You typically drive in a run group of similarly skilled drivers and, if you are new to DE, an instructor will be assigned to guide you through the entire process / course. You will acquire the knowledge and develop the skills needed to drive safely at a high rate of speed. The goal is to have safe, high-speed fun.

Although Everglades Region is not currently hosting DE or HPDE events, our members can register for events hosted by other PCA regions and track day groups. There is significant cost to rent a track like Sebring and a core team of enthusiast, volunteers are needed to run the program and instruct. We don’t have that critical mass yet, but do have potential to co-sponsor with another organization. We’ll keep you posted as that develops.

In the interim, interested Everglades Region members are referred to our neighboring PCA regions. Suncoast Region ( ) and Gold Coast ( ) frequently host events. In addition, PBOC Motorsports Club ( ) and Chin Motorsports ( ) schedule events locally and nationally. Full schedules and details are available on their respective websites. Once registration opens, you need to act fast since these programs fill quickly. Here are some of the upcoming events in South Florida:

Date Organizer Track
February 17-18 Chin Sebring
February 23-24 Suncoast/ Goldcoast Sebring
March 24-25 PBOC/ Goldcoast Homestead Miami
March 24-25 Chin Sebring

Shrimp Boil Potluck at the Wallens

Shrimp Boil Potluck at the Wallens in Golden Gate Estates

A big thank you to Tim and Linda Wallen for their hospitality on January 28, 2018. The Wallens hosted the Everglades Region PCA at their shop in Golden Gate Estates for a traditional shrimp boil party. If you didn’t attend, you missed out on their savory mix of shrimp, corn and potatoes boiled with a top-secret recipe. Attendance was capped at 75 members, who also brought side dishes and desserts like homemade key lime pie. A great time was had by all — it’s not just the cars, it’s the people!

Everglades Region PCA Members Explore the Revs Institute

Everglades Region PCA Members Explore the Revs Institute

On January 19, the Everglades Region PCA rendezvoused 64 vehicles for a road rally down to the Revs Institute in Naples. It was a great turn out with 110 people viewing the exclusive Collier Collection of vintage automobiles. Guests enjoyed a private docent led tour and learned about the history of car racing and the evolution of the automobile.

Imagine seeing the very first Porsche 550-01, Gary Cooper’s short-chassis 1935 Duesenberg SSJ and the very first Ferrari race car to be imported to the United States…..very impressive! The technical innovation required in developing these cars was fascinating. Over 100 of the rarest and most technically advanced vehicles for their time ever built were on display. The Revs library includes rare books, photographs and priceless documents, and is a great place to research the history of your own vehicle.

After the tour the group enjoyed a beautiful lunch at various restaurants in Naples including beachfront dining at LaPlaya Resort. It was such a great day. A big thank you to JP and Valerie Petracco for spearheading this event with the help of fellow members Tom Kring and Tom Pitser.

Dueling Porsche’s Take On Buckingham!

Dueling Porsche’s Take On Buckingham

37 cars and drivers tackled the chilly, concrete runways of Buckingham Airfield on December 10th in a “Dueling Porsches” competition. Based on an autocross course layout, drivers faced off in double elimination competition to determine who was quickest in each of the run groups. Instead of racing against the clock as in traditional autocross, this event placed two cars on the 1 mile circuit at the same time. Starting on opposite sides of the course, it was a race to see who could get back to their finish line first, without knocking down too many traffic cones. One cone was forgiven, two cones meant elimination. Off-course excursions lead to elimination as well.

The four run groups represented cars of similar speed capability, leaving it up to the drivers to make the winning difference. Everyone enjoyed three practice runs in the morning. Competitive runs started after lunch. When the dust settled, these were the winners, each taking home Porsche scale models as their trophies. GT3’s, GT4’s and Caymans were kings of the jungle.

Police Escorted Porsche Parade Delivers Gifts To Golisano Children’s Hospital for Christmas

Porsche Parade Delivers Gifts to Golisano Children’s Hospital

Over 70 cars gathered at Autoquest in Fort Myers on December 14th, forming a caravan for the run to Golisano Children’s Hospital. The mission was to deliver Christmas gifts to 50 children in the cancer treatment center. Everglades Region reached out to members, Porsche owners and the Gulf Harbor exotic car community for their support.
Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida is a state-of-the-art, family centered, full-service children’s hospital. The Pedriatic Cancer unit is dedicated to helping children fight the many forms of this dangerous disease.
Escorted by Lee County Sheriff’s officers, the caravan made it’s way to the HealthPark Medical Center campus. On arrival, kids and staff from the hospital gathered under the portico where Santa Claus distributed gifts. Golisano staff gathered the remaining gifts in bins for distribution to kids unable to be outside. The hospital offers a wide array of activities for the kids, where gifts also come into play.
From Golisano, the caravan carried on to Marine Max in Fort Myers where participants enjoyed a casual lunch, set against a backdrop of Porsches, boats and a brilliant blue sky. Thanks to the Jonesez II BBQ and Sunny Days Ice Cream trucks for coming out!
Special thanks to John & Val Petracco for organizing the event, to Autoquest for the launch point, to Lee County Sheriff for the escort and to Marine Max for the lunch venue.
