Cars On 5th – Naples

The annual “Cars on 5th” in Naples bring out hundreds of fabulous automobiles and fills the streets with car enthusiasts. The “British-Italian-German Sports & Collector Car Show” in Cape Coral is a more laid back event, but draws an equally passionate group of owners and their beautiful cars. What’s the common thread? A pair of Porsches, born 51 years apart in Zuffenhausen, earned top awards at these 2017 shows!

At Cars on 5th, Hank Bernbaum won Best In Show – Super Car Class with his 2015, Weissach Package 918 Spyder
One of only 918 cars built, this is no garage queen. Hank and his sapphire blue 918 divide their time between Lake Forest, Illinois and Naples. Although he uses a transport service to shuttle the car back and forth, Hank drives the car regularly on the street. In 2013, a 918 fitted with the optional ‘Weissach Package’ set a Nürburgring lap time of 6:57 on the 20.6 km (12.8 mi) road course, reducing the previous record by 14 seconds, and making it the first series production street-legal car to break the 7-minute barrier. Hank is a member of the Chicago Region PCA and attends local Everglades Region events when he is SW Florida.

575 cars participated in the 2017 edition of Cars on 5th, including 42 Porsches.

B.I.G. Show – Cape Coral

At the B.I.G. Show, John Boles won Best In Show and Best pre-1999 Porsche with his 1964, 356C Cabriolet
This numbers matching beauty is finished in sky blue with a red leather interior. The car’s early days were spent in Pennsylvania. John helped a business associate buy the car in 1994 from the original owner. When he stopped driving it, John purchased the car in 2012. The 356 has enjoyed a proper paint job with bare metal restoration, including the correct single stage paint. All chrome parts are original as well as the leather seats. All the mechanicals were redone for safety and reliability. Although John drives his 356 regularly, the car has only accumulated 58,000 documented miles. It recently completed a 400 mile road rally with the Alfa Romeo Club on New Years Day, touring the back roads of Central Florida. A total of 133 cars participated in B.I.G. 2017, including 15 Porsches.

In case you are wondering, the white 356SC coupe in the background was entered by John’s wife Judy, winning 2nd place in class. Other trophy winning Porsches included:

  • Carlos Ojeda 1989 – 944 Turbo S
  • Richard Lumpp 2016 – Boxster Spyder
  • Gladwyn (Gee) Lopez 2015 – Cayman GTS
  • Mike Barth 2017 911 Targa
